This summer, for the first time in over ten years, I spent a good amount of time swimming, all before Michael Phelps took over the limelight.  My kiddos finally got to the age where they could manage themselves (mostly) in the water and could get by without constant attention–this meant that except for the 2 weeks Timothy was on antibiotics for an ear infection we went swimming about 2-3 times a week.  It was a blast.
When Timothy started going to swimming lessons, he wouldn’t jump into the pool without being scared.  He also wouldn’t voluntarily put his head under.  After a summer of swimming, I could throw him across the pool and he would go right under.  He even put his head under and went under the rope for the swim lane. It was pretty awesome to watch him mature.
Bethany even got better as we went along. She started the summer fearless, then realized that when she went under the water, she couldn’t breathe, but by the end of the summer she was diving under with Timothy.  It was awesome.  I think next year they will both be able to take lessons and have a GREAT time.
This weekend marks the end of this crazy summer. The first summer we’ve had in 6 years that didn’t have a SUCKY August.  The first summer that our kids required little enough supervision to actually ENJOY.  I guess it’s the last summer I have as a 20-something.  A good way to go out on top, I say.
